A two month summer in Boston just flew by, and now I’m back in Galveston. The dreaded second year of med school starts tomorrow with CVP (Cardiovascular Pulmonary).

This afternoon, I decided to take a break from my computer and go out. I went to the Galveston Island State Park, which is a good 15 miles west from where I live on the island. The place is really nice, quiet, and very scenic. Definitely a must see if you’re into scenery and water.

Due to the inspiration set by DJ Were-Panda, I decided to finally go to Scholes International Airport here in Galveston, TX. Now don’t judge this place too early: even though it’s called an international airport, the only international planes flying into it are probably sea gulls migrating from South America.

This airport caters mostly to private business. Want a private helicopter tour? Go to this airport. Want a private airplane tour? Go to this airport. Want to learn how to fly a Cessna? Yes, go to this airport.

Regardless, it was fun walking straight up to the fences photographing planes and helicopters coming in and out, while at the same time not worrying whether Homeland Security will add you to the “No Fly” list.

I didn’t see any planes come into the airport, unfortunately, but I did see a lot of them on the ground.

The classical Galveston Mardi Gras tradition kicked off this past weekend with a ton of fanfare. We went to the “Krewe of Gambrinus” parade on Seawall. Absolutely fun parade: tons of people were there yelling and screaming for beads to be thrown from the floats, while fireworks were being set off on the beach.

The festivities continue next weekend. Looking forward to see Galveston come alive during these next couple of weeks.

Galveston is a city that’s rich in history from the 1800s, and it’s one of the only few Texas cities that’s been able to preserve so much of that history. I’ve made it a personal goal to photograph as much as I can of Galveston history, architecture, and culture.

This weekend, I went around the Strand and Broadway streets and photographed several of the old buildings that I see regularly but knew absolutely nothing about. I have uploaded them to Flickr, with brief comments about each of them.

I went on a quick photo shoot at the Yacht Basin behind my condo. Guess what I saw? Somebody took off the “Honda” logo from their Honda Ridgeline, and replaced it with a Cadillac logo!

Now don’t get me wrong.. I think Cadillac is a great company, and GM has done a great job of reviving the company, but still…. it’s a Honda. Why change the logo?
