Video of Engagement Puja

March 20th, 2009 No comments

[flashvideo file=wp-content/uploads/2009/03/EngagementPuja2009.flv /]

This is video from the engagement puja. If you’re interested in seeing what a hindu engagement party looks like, then I’m sure you’ll find this interesting. The priest is speaking in Sanskrit the entire time, which is now considered a written language only.

If anyone is interested in a full HD copy of this video on a DVD, just let me know.

Finally fixed WordPress!

January 24th, 2009 No comments

I apologize for not posting anything new in over a year. WordPress decided to start being dumb and wouldn’t accept new entries, and I was too lazy to figure out what the problem was.

Since April 8, 2008, a lot has happened:
- I took the USMLE Step 1 exam in June. One headache finally over!
- Moved from Galveston to Austin in June to start my 3rd and 4th year rotations.
- Put up the first iPhone medical calculator on the App Store: Mediquations

- Proposed to Maria on September 19, 2008! Wedding date is set for January 2, 2010.

- Upgraded to a Nikon D90 after sadly parting ways with my D50. The D90 is a great camera, btw. Highly recommended!
- Obama is our new president! I have high expectations for him, but I am sure he will deliver. He is a very smart, highly educated, pro-science, pro-technology, anti-unnecessary war man. That should make for a winning combination!

NASA… Next stop: Mars.

I think by now, it has become apparent that 60 Minutes is one of my favorite shows on television. I try to watch every week, since there is usually at least one story that fascinates me. This week, it’s about NASA.

If you didn’t know by now, NASA is working on sending a man to the moon again by 2020 and to Mars by 2030, and they’re working at full speed. Personally, I’m excited that the US is finally working again on ‘deep space’ exploration. First of all, this will motivate children to study science and engineering, which might fix the engineer drought that American companies are facing. Secondly, this may reignite hope into the heart of humanity, so that we start thinking about the future again just like how we did in the 60s. Finally, it will once again show that if humanity sets its mind on a goal, it can and will be achieved.

The video is 11 minutes, so if you have time, give it a watch. Oh, and I’d like to hear your thoughts about sending a man to Mars.

The Untold Story

Apple iPhone jobs

I just finished reading this amazing article in Wired about the miracles of Steve Jobs and his wondrous product, the iPhone. The article discusses the development of the iPhone, which had been in planning and development stages since 2002. If you are the least bit interested in design, hardware, software, or are just interested in the genius that is Steve Jobs, you must read this article.

An interesting excerpt:

For those working on the iPhone, the next three months would be the most stressful of their careers. Screaming matches broke out routinely in the hallways. Engineers, frazzled from all-night coding sessions, quit, only to rejoin days later after catching up on their sleep. A product manager slammed the door to her office so hard that the handle bent and locked her in; it took colleagues more than an hour and some well-placed whacks with an aluminum bat to free her.

Galveston Statue

A two month summer in Boston just flew by, and now I’m back in Galveston. The dreaded second year of med school starts tomorrow with CVP (Cardiovascular Pulmonary).

If you missed any of my Boston photos, here’s links to all of them:

A word from the wise

March 15th, 2007 1 comment

This quote is taken out of my medical school neuroscience textbook by John Nolte:

At the present time the nature of the little person within the CNS (central nervous system) who pulls the strings when we decide to move is not entirely clear.

I never realized that modern science was on a scavenger hunt to find little people in our brains! This is a big realization… now it all makes sense to me! It’s just like “Where’s Waldo?“! We’re looking for the tiny, little red guy in the crowd!

*end sarcasm*
